At Grieving Together Maine, therapy is grounded in the belief that healing is possible. Our approach integrates core grief-informed therapeutic models—including the Dual Process Model of Grief, Meaning-Centered Grief Therapy, Continuing Bonds Theory, and the Compassionate Bereavement Framework. These models help us understand how grief affects identity, functioning, relationships, and the ability to make meaning after loss. The treatment model is collaborative, strengths-based, and evidence-informed. The treatment you receive is backed by research, adapted to your unique commitments, and delivered with compassion and respect.
In addition to grief-focused care, we also provide treatment for Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and the complex relationship between grief, trauma, and substance use. Many individuals use substances as a way to cope with overwhelming pain, numb emotional intensity, manage trauma responses, or navigate difficult transitions. Our approach integrates evidence-based modalities such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), harm reduction frameworks, relapse-prevention planning, and trauma-informed care. We work together to identify triggers and warning signs, strengthen coping skills, build internal and external supports, reduce shame and stigma, and cultivate the confidence needed to pursue recovery goals at your own pace. Whether your commitment involves reducing use, maintaining sobriety, or exploring readiness for change, we meet you where you are with respect, empathy, and collaboration.
Together, we work to understand the challenges you are facing and the ways grief shows up in your daily life—emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. Our therapeutic goals may include increasing emotional regulation, developing coping strategies, strengthening support systems, integrating the loss into your ongoing story, rebuilding identity, restoring a sense of stability and purpose, and creating space for meaning, hope, and connection. We clarify the direction you want to go and build the skills needed to create meaningful and sustainable change. Therapy is not something done to you—it is something we build together.
You are the expert on your own life. We take time to understand your story, your strengths, your values, and what success looks like for you. Your commitments guide the therapy process, and we regularly check in to ensure your needs are being met and that the work remains aligned with what matters most to you.
